Clean shows & movies to binge

Anyone else just LOVE curling up on the couch watching a good show? Sometimes it's hard to find a good one, so I created this list of CLEAN tv shows and movies that I highly recommend binging. I can't even count the amount of times I've started a show and had to stop watching it because it got racy or violent. With little kids always running around, I want to make sure that what I watch is appropriate (even if they are sleeping!)

I have personally watched everything on this list, and I'm so excited to share! I spent a ton of time creating this list with the hopes that clean entertainment can help us through this hard time! There are a few recommendations that I have minor reservations about, but we can get into that later. Without further ado…

Clean + uplifting TV shows & movies

I feel like everyone is always looking for some type of entertainment or distraction, and like I said, I seriously love to snuggle up with a cozy blanket and watch a good show or movie. I really try to make sure my consumption is uplifting, even if it's sad or serious at times, but that it's something that hopefully lives in that vain of helping me see the world with better eyes or be a better person, or at least doesn't bring me down!

I really try to shy away from entertainment with a lot of bad language, sexuality, and violence. I've even stopped watching shows that just have a “dark” feeling before, even if they don't have a lot of sex/violence/language, because I just don't want to get dragged down by anything I'm watching.

So fresh and so clean, clean!

Disclaimer: I have not watched these shows or movies with major laser focus on the content, so there could definitely be a swear word or scene here or there that I have missed. But as far as my memory serves me, these are all shows that left me feeling better or happier.

I strongly suggest everyone use Common Sense Media to make your own decisions before you watch any of these, or really any new show or movie! This site spells out the movie or show's content in seven categories: positive messages, violence, language (tells specific words used and how many times), drinking/drugs/smoking, positive role models, sex, and consumerism. The list is very all inclusive and I love that you can track the good as well as the bad! It makes it so that you know exactly what you're getting into beforehand.

Another resource that I use and love is VidAngel. VidAngel is actually offering a 2 week free trial right now! It takes the shows that are on Netflix and Amazon Prime and filters them according to your preference. You can take out all swear words, sex, violence, etc! All the filters are totally customizable. It's AMAZING! Here's our post ALL about how VidAngel works!

My list of CLEAN shows

I created a little key for the shows suggested below, so you could easily identify some of the more kid-friendly shows, and a couple I recommend with reservations.

Any show with a * is recommended with reservations.
Any show with a ^ can be watched with kids.

  • This Is Us
  • New Amsterdam
  • Parenthood
  • Poldark*: There is one episode in the series where a racy scene is shown. You will know the episode when you watch it because the subject builds throughout. You can skip the whole episode because you'll know from the next one what happened. Besides that, this is such a good period drama that is more fast paced than Downton Abbey!
  • Downton Abbey
  • Fixer Upper^
  • Call the Midwife
  • Virgin River
  • Cheer*: I was hesitant to start this series, but so many of my friends loved it. It's rated M for mature on Netflix, so I was totally expecting to get offended and turn it off ha! I think the rating was actually a good thing because it warns of mature content (subject matter, vaping, etc), but is actually a really good show!
  • The Wonder Years^
  • Hart of Dixie
  • American Idol^
  • The Voice^
  • The Imagineering Story^
  • So You Think You Can Dance^
  • Tidying Up with Marie Kondo^

  • Batman Begins
  • The Blind Side
  • Cast Away
  • Cinderella Man^
  • Cool Runnings^
  • Crazy Rich Asians
  • Dances With Wolves
  • The Fault in our Stars
  • The Family Man
  • Field of Dreams
  • The Greatest Showman^
  • The Help
  • Hidden Figures
  • Jurassic Park
  • The Karate Kid II
  • The Mask of Zorro
  • Me Before You
  • Moneyball* (has a couple f-words, try watching with VidAngel)
  • Mr. Holland's Opus
  • Newsies
  • October Sky
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
  • The Pursuit of Happiness
  • Remember The Titans^
  • Return to Me
  • Rudy^
  • Seabiscuit^
  • Serendipity
  • Sleepless in Seattle
  • Sound of Music^
  • Star Wars Series^
  • To All the Boys I've Loved Before
  • To All the Boys I've Loved Before 2

  1. Thank you really appreciate like minded viewing needs. As your disclaimer stated some of these you might not remember certain scenes, but just a heads up to help others. Parenthood has crude conversations and drug use. I loved hart of Dixie but does have a couple racy scenes, and I stopped watching midwife due to a rape scene in it, but maybe I should give that one another chance. And also like you already stated the common sense media is a great resource to check out shows before viewing, allowing us to help make the decision ourselves. I am always trying to find something clean to watch so thank you for your recommendations ❤️

    1. Its been a few years since I watched Parenthood and Hart of Dixie! So I appreciate this input 🙂 also I haven’t seen ALL the episodes of Call the Midwife (yet!) – that’s maybe the only series on here that I haven’t completed but have heard people who are very very conservative suggest it, so I figured it was safe. But yes, that’s for sure the reason I also heavily endorsed using Common Sense Media so everyone can see exactly what they’d be watching and decide for themselves. 🙂

  2. It’s an older one, but if you like Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymore, “Somewhere In Time” is a Do Not Miss!! Good date night OR chick flick movie!

  3. Also Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogy! Those are about as clean as you can get (despite the battle scenes).

  4. Lost in Space series is very family friendly as well.
John MacArthur had it right when he said that we should not be entertained by the sins for which Christ died. 🙂
