Elle on Amazon Prime Review: The Rare Clean Tween Show + James Van Der Beek’s Final Role

💗 New on Prime July 1, 2026: Elle (the Legally Blonde prequel)

I have been watching all afternoon and I had to pause to write this up. Elle is the rare tween show I would actually let my 11 and 13-year-old daughters watch, plus it features James Van Der Beek's final TV role. Here is my honest review after four episodes.

I want to caveat this review up front: I was bracing myself for the worst. My daughters are 11 and 13, and I am extremely careful about what I let them watch. I could not even get through The Summer I Turned Pretty myself because of how much underage drinking and promiscuity was baked into every episode. So when I sat down with Elle, I was fully prepared to flip it off within the first fifteen minutes.

Four episodes in, I haven't seen anything yet that I would not want my girls watching. This is a rare, rare find, and I wanted to get a review up right away so other tween moms can find it before they scroll past Elle wondering if it is safe.

What is Elle on Amazon Prime Video?

Elle is a brand new Amazon Prime Video original series that premiered July 1, 2026. It is a prequel to the Legally Blonde movies, set six years before the events of the first film, and follows Elle Woods during her high school years, before she went to Harvard Law, before her first kiss, before her whole “what, like it's hard” moment ever happened.

Newcomer Lexi Minetree plays teenage Elle Woods. June Diane Raphael plays her mom Eva, and Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do!) plays her dad Wyatt. The rest of the cast includes Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney, and Zac Looker. The series was created by Laura Kittrell.

Amazon renewed Elle for a second season back in January 2026 (before it had even premiered), which tells you how much they believe in it.

Is Elle appropriate for tweens? My honest take as a mom of 11 and 13-year-old girls

Short answer, so far: yes.

Four episodes in, I have not seen anything I would not want my 11-year-old or 13-year-old daughters watching. Which is saying something. I am usually the mom who reads every review before I let my girls near a new show, and I turn a lot of stuff off. Elle has actually been the opposite experience. I keep waiting for the shoe to drop with Elle, and it just does not.

What the show is really about is beautiful. So far, the episodes explore bullying, friendship, kindness, and inclusion. Elle is charming and innocent and delightful, and the show treats teenage girlhood with a lot of sweetness and none of the messiness I was expecting.

Comparison points for other moms trying to figure out where Elle lands on the age-appropriate spectrum:

  • If you couldn't get through The Summer I Turned Pretty: You'll be fine here. Elle is not even in the same universe. SO FAR, I haven't seen any underage drinking, no promiscuity, and (four episodes in) no first kiss for Elle yet.
  • If you were fine with the original Legally Blonde movie: This is much cleaner than that movie. I still wouldn't have my 7 year old daughter watch it (mostly because it's just themed for kids who are a bit older) but it really is perfect for teens and tweens and moms to all watch together.
  • If your kids have only ever watched Little House on the Prairie: Okay, this is not going to be your speed. It is still a teen show set in modern-adjacent times with some teenage crushes and social drama. But by the standards of what Prime is putting out for this age group, Elle is remarkable.

Every family has a different filter, and my kids' filter might not match yours. But if you have been feeling like there is nothing to watch with your tween that is not going to expose her to things she is not ready for, Elle is worth trying.

The '90s nods that make Elle a perfect mom-daughter watch

One of my favorite surprises about Elle is how many little '90s Easter eggs are baked into it. Because the show is set six years before Legally Blonde came out in 2001, it lives squarely in the mid-'90s, and the details are so fun for those of us who grew up in that era.

  • The fashion is chef's kiss. Think plaid, mini backpacks, matching sets, and the exact shade of pink you remember from middle school.
  • Cordless phones (the little chunky ones with the pull-out antenna) get real screen time.
  • There is a scene where Elle plays Oregon Trail, and I audibly gasped with delight!
  • The pop culture references and turns of phrase are pitched right at moms. Your tween will not catch them, but you will.

These little moments are what make Elle such a fun co-watch. Your daughter is invested in Elle's high school drama, and you are laughing at the Oregon Trail joke.

The acting is exceptional (no cringe factor, no laugh track)

One thing I have to call out separately: the acting is really, really good. So many tween shows land in cringe territory because of the cheesy dialogue delivery, the too-loud laugh track, and the over-acted teen drama. Elle has none of that. There is no laugh track at all. The cast is talented, and the writing lets them play the material with real weight. It is a show you can sit through as an adult without wincing, which is a very rare thing in this genre.

The Seattle vs. Beverly Hills culture clash (from someone who has lived in both)

Elle plays on the cultural contrast between Seattle and Beverly Hills throughout the series. I have lived in both places, so I can speak to this one with a little authority. Yes, the discrepancy between the two is exaggerated for comedic effect. It is also spot-on enough that it is laughable and pretty accurate at the same time. If you have ever moved between very different cities, you will recognize the beats they are playing.

James Van Der Beek's final TV role in Elle

One of the biggest emotional gut-punches of watching Elle is that this is James Van Der Beek's final television role. Per Deadline and other outlets, filming began in April 2025, and the cast and crew were aware during production that this would likely be one of his last performances. He passed away following a battle with colorectal cancer.

He plays Dean Wilson, described in press materials as the city's new mayoral candidate and current school district superintendent. His first major appearance is in episode 3, which is where I am right now, and it is unexpected and delightful and gutting all at the same time.

When he showed up on screen, I literally teared up a little. The ending of his life was so bittersweet, and seeing him again while knowing he was in the middle of his cancer journey, toward the end of his life, was just really tender. If you grew up watching him in movies, this appearance is deeply nostalgic and heartwarming.

If you loved him on Dawson's Creek, this is a beautiful last hurrah, and the show has done a lovely job of giving him a role that matters to Elle's story. And they dedicate Episode 3 to his memory.

When did Elle premiere on Amazon Prime, and is there a Season 2?

Elle premiered on Amazon Prime Video on July 1, 2026, which is why I am writing this literally the day of. It is available now to all Prime Video subscribers.

Yes, there will be a Season 2. Amazon renewed the series in January 2026, six months before it even premiered, which is basically unheard of and tells you they have a lot of confidence in this one.

Every single one of these is under $20 (most are under $15), Prime-eligible, and pink enough to make it feel like a mini spa night with your girls.
