When I found out about the launch of the kate spade on purpose collection in 2014, I immediately and enthusiastically wrote about it here to make sure all my readers knew about the good that kate spade was doing for a small community in Rwanda. And then almost two years ago, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Masaro and meet the 150 women whose lives this project is changing.
The on purpose collection is made by a community of women in Rwanda, a supplier to kate spade. This collection has empowered these women in Rwanda to use their skills to create a profitable business. They’re hand stitching pom poms, sequins, totes, and hand-woven friendship bracelets that are being sold by kate spade.
What I love most about the on purpose initiative in Rwanda is that the women supplying this kate spade line have completely changed their own lives by working hard to provide a beautiful product for one of the most well-known brands in the world.
I got to see first-hand the pride and confidence instilled in these women, and came away forever changed by their stories of triumph after trial. All of the women working in this factory survived the Rwandan genocide of 1994, one of the most horrific genocides in the history of the world where over 1 million people were killed in 100 days. These women have risen above the depths of despair and have SO MUCH JOY, in their faces, in their hearts, in their work, in the factory, in everything they do. The work they've done has literally transformed the entire community of Masoro and a piece of my heart will always be with them.
