How to NOT wash your hair for a week!

Curled Hair

There are a few things I feel like unite most of my female friends: loving chocolate, a good Meg Ryan movie, and hating that dreaded day when you have to wash and dry your hair. And I’m here to say girl, I feel your pain! So much so that today’s post is ALL about how to put off washing your hair as long as possible. All my best tips and tricks for stretching out one wash, right here, right now.

First thing’s first: you are going to need DRY SHAMPOO. I’ve tried just about everything out there from the most to least expensive, all the drugstore kinds, and like most things, I feel like you get what you pay for!

I haven’t found anything I love that’s SUPER cheap to use for an entire week … a few that are good for a day or two, but none that will really help your hair hold out an entire week between washes without getting pretty gross in between.

FAVORITE DRY SHAMPOOS:

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray Shampoo 8 out of 10: smells amazing, works super well, DOESN’T create build-up, no residue, but also doesn’t cleanse as well as others.
Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo 9 out of 10: LOVE the smell, cleanses perfectly, does leave a slight white residue if you go overboard.
Perfect Hair Day Living Proof Dry Shampoo 9 out of 10: best at cleansing, great smell, easy to use for beginners, doesn’t work as well at end of week.
R&Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo: 8 out of 10: love the smell and cleansing power but runs out FAST.
Bumble & Bumble Prêt-à-Powder 10 out of 10: best powder dry shampoo I’ve found! Cuts grease without buildup, no smell (for those who don’t want any fragrance) and creates great volume too.
Big Sexy Hair Powder Play: 9 out of 10: great volume builder and grease fighter, but does leave residue and buildup.
Got2B Powder’ful Volumizing Styling Powder 9 out of 10: this is probably the BEST bang for your buck!! Really inexpensive but works well. Can build up pretty quickly so use sparingly!

Oribe Texture Spray

The thing that’s nice about a spray dry shampoo is it’s a little easier to distribute evenly all over your roots.  But the powder is GREAT for travel or even a small bottle to have in your bag in case you look in your car mirror and see that your hair could use a little refresh! Which happens to me more than I want to admit, ha.

Dry Shampoo

HOW TO USE DRY SHAMPOO: I try to take my hair in layers and start at the top of my head and work all the way down to the nape of my neck, adding a little dry shampoo to each layer, JUST at the root.

Then I take a brush like this one and brush it through my hair to make sure it’s evenly distributed!

I do this EVERY DAY of the week that I’m trying to get my hair to last between washes. If I work out, I try to keep my hair UP and out of the way of getting sweaty. If my hair does get sweaty at all, I come home and use the dryer on “cool shot” to dry up any sweat before I use dry shampoo to cleanse.

Bumble and Bumble Hair Care

GETTING YOUR CURLS TO LAST: sometimes if I’ve just curled my hair that day, and if I’m using a powder dry shampoo, I’ll put a little into the bottom of my hair, where the curls are heavier, to make the curls last longer! I also highly, highly recommend using the beachwaver to curl your hair. There’s just something about that curling iron that makes curls last longer!! And I most often use the 1″ barrel to curl the first day, then the curls relax as the week goes on.

Curled Hair

One of my biggest tips is to be SURE you shower each day with a shower cap! I love this one because it’s terry cloth lined so it’s really soft AND stays on your head way better than one that’s just plastic that may slide around and not actually hold your hair very well.

Fresh Washed Hair

And if you’ve been reading this going, “no freaking way Corrine! My hair gets greasy on day two!” Girlfriend. I hear you. I used to think this too! It’s literally a matter of training your hair. Add on a day or two each week, and you’ll be amazed at how your hair will start lasting longer when it’s not used to being washed so much!

Do you brush your hair like how you’d normally brush it (like from root to end) or just in the roots so the dry shampoo stays on the roots???

Corrine:

All the way from root to end!! 🙂

Thanks for the reply! I’ve always done just the roots, must be what I’m doing wrong because it never feels or looks that ‘clean’ after! Thank you for your help!
